Fabulous reads – Swashbuckle your way through Kenyon’s latest novel

Book review - Deadmen Walking by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Deadmen Walking (Deadman’s Cross #1), Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 9780349412153

I WOULD best describe this as the Pirates of the Caribbean meets Lord of the Rings meets Shakespeare. There is a lot going on in Deadmen Walking. To start off: this is not your typical Kenyon novel (who specialises in adult paranormal romance). Rather it’s an paranormal adventure with some romance thrown in and it gets better!

Bane is our hero. He’s big, bad and basically a dead pirate set on saving the world. He was married to Vine, the beautiful and evil Vine. To cut a long story short, Bane ends up tethered to Vine’s sister Marcelina for eternity (cue romantic interest).

A young, innocent and seemingly human girl seeks Bane out to help find her lost brother, the captain of a sunken ship. She holds out an ancient amulet sent to her long after his death – from him. Bane’s goal is to rescue the missing brother all the while plotting to go to war against the evil Vine as well as battling his own moodiness all along the way. It’s mythical adventure paranormal romance-ish.

This book is crammed full of adventure, myths and legends. There is a fair amount of world building, but this is to be expected as it is the first book in the Deadman’s Cross series.

On Goodreads it is plain to see that Kenyon’s fans are loving the new series, critics are hating it and fantasy lovers are undecided. It’s a four-star rating for this well written but convoluted novel. And to answer your unasked but burning question, yes there are explicit scenes, it is after all Sherrilyn Kenyon.
