Fabulous reads – New book inspires edible handmade gifts

Book review - Handmade Gifts from the Kitchen by Alison Walker.

Handmade Gifts from the Kitchen, Alison Walker, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781432309329

THIS is the perfect season for a book such as this one to come out.

End of year teacher’s gifts, Christmas functions, and of course, gift ideas!

It is not just another recipe book as each recipe shows you how to package or present your baked items in a way that they can be given as gifts.

The recipes are delightful, and the presentation is gorgeous, with Tara Fisher’s photography bringing every page to life.

For moms despairing at the thought of six weeks of holiday, this is the book for you.

There are so many fun ideas to make with your children, such as candy canes, mini Christmas cakes, and, my personal favourite – a gingerbread house kit.

As far as sweet treats go, the book also incorporates traditional favourites such as coconut ice and Turkish delight.

I especially enjoyed the peanut brittle and nougat recipes, which allow you to play with flavours. Want something a little different – try orange blossom, wildflower or lavender honey.

I enjoy trying out new things in the kitchen, but I’ve yet to master the perfect macaron. I am hoping the recipe included in this little gem of a book will change that.

For the super industrious cook, there is also an entire section dedicated to making your own sauces, relishes, chutneys and jams.

Far tastier than store-bought items and without all the added preservatives.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys spending time in the kitchen, who likes to impress when entertaining, and who prefers personal, home-made gifts to commercial buying.
