Fabulous reads – Let your survival instincts take over

Book review - Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips.

Fierce Kingdom, Gin Phillips, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9780857525017

Gin Phillips has taken every mother’s nightmare and stretched it into a 275 page novel of terror.

I would suggest anxiety sufferers stay far away from this one – it’s stomach wrenching.

Joan and her four-year-old son are out at the zoo on a beautiful tranquil day.

It’s a peaceful and relaxing afternoon with Lincoln.

As they prepare to leave, a strange popping sound begins and Joan spies the guns.

She runs, hanging onto her child for dear life. It’s the ultimate game of hide and seek with four- and two-legged monsters in the dark.

ALSO READ: Fabulous reads – A haunting story, yet inspirational

There are a number of elements in this book that make it more than your average suspense-filled thriller.

It’s set in today’s time, so realistically it could happen.

It’s set in a familiar setting as most people can picture a zoo in their mind and it makes it so relatable.

For every mother, it’s a scene of danger that we have all thought of and dreaded.

My stomach was in knots for the entire read.

The gunman (men?), the wild animals, the unpredictable young child – it all adds up to a recipe for disaster.

Joan fights through the enclosures, the dark and other characters also on the run for survival.

This novel scared the pants off of me!
