Fabulous reads – Haunting tale oozes uneasiness

Book review - Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell.

Then She Was Gone, Lisa Jewell, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781780896427

Laurel’s daughter went missing almost 10 years ago.

Ellie was 15 years old and was described as being beautiful and so full of life.

Then she was gone.

Ellie disappeared without a trace, with no answers left behind for her shattered family, just an empty hole and endless questions.

Laurel, still holding onto eternal hope but moving on with her life, meets the dashing stranger, Floyd.

They begin dating and Floyd is charming and charismatic, everything that Laurel has missed after her broken marriage.

She meets Poppy, his nine-year-old daughter, and she is the splitting image of Ellie at that age and everything comes swirling back to Laurel and the past comes flashing back with a vengeance.

There are still too many questions about what happened to her dear Ellie.

Who is Poppy, really?

What happened to Floyd’s wife and where is she now?

But most importantly, who really knows the true events of Ellie’s disappearance?

This is one of the better without a trace novels I’ve read recently. It’s similar to Gone Girl, with less psychopathic tendencies, mixed with a dash of The Girl on the Train, minus the alcoholism.

All-in-all, it has a neat and tidy ending which is so refreshing!
