Elvis sings about his journey from waiter to legal eagle

It promises to be a wonderful night, so go along and support this talented young man, Elvis Tazarurwa.

A YOUNG local artist, Elvis Tazarurwa, has a lovely story to tell from Lawyer to Lyrics at Lupa Restaurant in Westville this Thursday, 7 December at 6pm.

In recent years, Elvis has gone from Westville waiter to legal eagle, but his evolution is still not complete.

This inspirational lawyer now has his sights set on being a singer, a dream he has had since he first began singing in church at the age of seven.

His musical talent was evident even at that age, and he confesses to “adding a bit of rap” to the hymn Jesus Loves Me, Yes I Know, which was the first song he ever performed in front of a live audience.

After finishing high school in his home country of Zimbabwe, Elvis came to South Africa to study law.

Elvis described himself as a singer who practices law on the side, rather than a lawyer who sings.

Most of the songs he writes and sings are what he describes as “slow rock songs.”

He said: “I’m an old soul and I prefer older music to the more current stuff. Older music is real. There are real lyrics there.”

When he performs, however, he covers songs from the 1950s right through to the present day. He even drops in the odd hip-hop tune every now and then, just to keep the young people happy.

When asked how he compares being in a courtroom to being on stage, Elvis says the only time he gets nervous is in court. “When I’m on stage, I don’t get nervous at all,” he said.

“When I’m in front of people and start singing, it’s just something I love doing.”

He’ll treat audiences to a two-hour selection of all-time favourites from the 50s right through to 2017 this Thursday. To book, contact 031 266 5877 or 031 266 8793.
