Fabulous reads – A ‘Norse’ blast from the past

Book review - Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.

Norse Mythology, Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 9781 4088 86809

I CAN easily imagine this story being shared around a roaring camp fire, on a crisp winter’s night with a full moon at its zenith.

Neil Gaiman has taken Norse mythology, mixed it with a touch of his own beautiful imagination, and given it a place in today’s world.

The Norse Gods are similar to, if not less cruel and incestuous, than those of their Greek counterparts.

This book holds a few of their stories, from their creation and birth to the end of their days: Ragnarok.

ALSO READ: Be aware of what you buy

The book is stunning to behold, with Thor’s infamous hammer, Mjollnir, adorning the cover.

The opening pages will give the reader a brief overview of what to expect in its pages, and it may seem quite daunting and a lot to process at first, but push forward. You will be forgiven for thinking you have stepped into what could possibly be a boring history lesson but it most definitely isn’t.

Most of the information gleaned in the beginning is, for the most part, repeated throughout the various chapters and somehow feels lees confusing and more interesting.

Forget what you think you know of Thor and Loki from watching Marvel’s interpretation of the arrogant gods.

The gods are vicious, cruel and downright violent. But still somehow kind and caring.

I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this book, but I am certainly glad to have read it. It is beautifully written, deeply engrossing and wildly thought-provoking.
