Fabulous reads – Enter a magical world with Morrigan Crow

Book review - Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1), Jessica Townsend, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781 5101 04112

THIS novel is nothing short of stunning. Jessica Townsend’s debut is filled with heart, adventure and more than a few exciting twists and turns.

Whenever I see a book compared to something I love dearly, in this case JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, I approach with caution.

Surely there can’t be something else just as engrossing as those books?

Nevermoor proved me wrong. It is on par with both multi-award winning series, hands down.

The protagonist, Morrigan Crow, is cursed, feared by her family and loathed by the townsfolk.

Anything that could go wrong, is her fault.

To top it all off, on the eve of her 11th birthday, she is fated to die.

Just before she is embraced by death, she is whisked off by the wily, and slightly bonkers, Jupiter North, to the land of Nevermoor.

His character reminded me of a mix between Hagrid (between picking up the main character, being slightly flustered and then welcoming the main character to a new world) and The Mad Hatter (not because he is ginger).

Morrigan will attempt to enter the Wondrous Society and needs to complete four near-impossible trials.

Along the way she meets a host of interesting characters, one of which includes a giant and hilarious talking cat.

I would love to divulge more details about Mog’s adventure, but to do so would ruin a rollercoaster ride of fun.

It has all the makings of a wonderful series and the ending will hit you like a curve ball.

You will not see it coming.

While the concept might seem slightly childish to older readers – I, too, was skeptical at first – just remember Harry Potter’s humble beginnings.

Do yourself the best favour of 2017 and pick up a copy of this book. You will not regret it.
