Fabulous reads – Stephen King gives debut novel his mark of approval

Book review - Final Girls by Riley Sager.

Final Girls, Riley Sager, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781 7850 34039

“Pretty girls covered in blood” is an apt description of how Riley Sager has taken the thriller community by storm with her debut novel.

After reading it, there is no surprise why Stephen King himself dubbed it as “the first great thriller of 2017”.

Quincy is a survivor of a mass murder. She went on vacation with a group of her friends to a cabin in the woods and was the only one to return home.

This totals three survivors of mass murders; Quincy, Sam and Lisa. The media was quick to dub them the ‘Final Girls’.

Cue the creepy music as Lisa is found dead, Sam appears on Quincy’s doorstep and Quincy’s now quiet and idyllic life is quickly upturned.

The novel is filled with enough turns to give you whiplash and it becomes a tense game of trust. To make matters worse, Quincy has total amnesia from the night at the cabin, combining the element mystery with an already thrilling and angst-filled novel.

While the writing style certainly isn’t going to be winning any Pulitzers, it is witty, and well set out. The story unfolds well with enough jumpy bits and goosebump-inducing moments to make it worthwhile.

You will be completely engrossed and, when you finally emerge from between the pages of the book and it’s 2am, you’ll be joining one of many other readers who are hitting their heads against the wall at the grand reveal and ending.
