Fabulous reads – Rapunzel will not let you down

Book review - Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin.

Rapunzel, Bethan Woollvin, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781 5098 42674

IF you are reading this review, the chances that you have read or have been read Rapunzel are pretty high.

Almost as high as the room of the tower the poor damsel was locked in.

Rapunzel is a lovely young lass with a gorgeous man of golden hair.

All she knows is the room in which she lives.

She has never explored the outside world, only ever viewing it from her window, far, far above the ground.

She was locked in the tall, stone prison by a greedy witch, who visits her but once a day to trim off a few pieces of her golden hair to sell. One day, when the witch is away, a dazzling prince… Nope, not in this story.

Bethan has taken the age-old tale and given it a twist. Why should a girl have to wait around to be rescued by a man? Why can’t she rescue herself?

This book that will encourage young girls to realise they have the strength in themselves to get the job done and do not have to wait around for their prince charming to wander by to save the day.

Parents better come armed with imaginitive answers for a few of the questions your littlies are sure to raise. Such as, ‘How does Rapunzel climb back into the tower when she climbs out to explore?’

The illustrations are beautiful and work well with the simplistic use of colour, which only includes yellow, black, white and grey.

Kudos to Bethan on her prevalent take on this classic fairy tale originally penned by the Brothers Grimm.
