Pharmacy reaches out to young girls

The Dis-Chem one million comforts campaign aims to collect and donate sanitary towels to young girls.

THE Robin Hood Foundation was one of the benefactors of Dis-Chem’s 2016 drive and will benefit from the project once again this year.

Each year Dis-Chem stores countrywide run their one million comforts campaign aimed at keeping girls in school by ensuring that there are no interruptions to their education because of their menstruation cycles. Research shows that girls between the ages of 12 and 18 in disadvantaged areas can miss up to a quarter of their schooling because they do not have access to adequate sanitary towels or are unable to afford them.

The distribution of sanitary towels in areas affected can have a practical impact on school attendance.

Coordinator of Robin Hood, Kim Griffith-Jones said last year alone Dis-Chem generously donated more than 2500 pads to The Robin Hood Foundation as well as other organisations in the community support women and young girls.

“We are so grateful that Dis-Chem has generously pledged to donate pads again this year in support of our Women’s Day educational outreach in Shongweni. Every pack donated is matched so we need the community support to help to make a difference to these young women and send them off with more than just one month’s supply,” said Kim.
