Hills will come alive with music

The Grammy award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo will also perform at the local fund-raiser.

THE Rotary Club of Kloof will again hold the family-friendly Festival in The Hills 2017 and this year will feature the multiple Grammy award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

The event, hosted by Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy, is on Saturday, 26 August and is an absolute cultural feast.

Joining the sensational Grammy winners are the newly formed Drakondale Girls’ Choir School from Howick.

This year’s theme, Songs of our Fathers, Songs of our Youth, is both a nod to songs old and new, as well as to the generations represented on stage as more than 800 primary school children will join the seasoned Ladysmith Black Mambazo group.

Artistic director of the event and the conductor of the Drakondale Girls’ Choir School, Judith Hawthorn, will conduct the massed choirs.

With the support of the Rotary Club of Kloof, the learners from Lamula Primary School in Molweni will also join in on the singing and excitement of the day.

“This is an incredible experience for these youngsters to perform in the awe-inspiring City Hill auditorium as well as to rub shoulders with international stars Ladysmith Black Mambazo,” said Judith.

“Bringing underprivileged children to this event is a powerful catalyst for them. They get to understand a world outside of their own small community, they are motivated to work hard and to aspire to reach their full potential, they interact with other children across the cultural divide, and the whole experience causes a huge shift in their thinking. It really is life-changing.

“We are immensely grateful for the support of Kloof Rotary who handle all the logistics of preparing Lamula’s students and hosting them on the day.”

All proceeds from Festival in the Hills go to The Rotary Club of Kloof to further its projects.

Festival in the Hills is open to the public with the Opening Parade starting at 9am.

Entrance is free, but bookings for the main performance must be made through Computicket on 0861 915 8000 before the event.
