Fabulous reads – Heart-warming novel explores second chance at life

Book review - About Last Night by Catherine Alliott.

About Last Night, Catherine Alliott, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9780718183622

Molly had it all. She had the marriage, the three kids and the upper-class London lifestyle and now all she has is a farm and a sometimes-son.

A possible saving grace pops up, a death in the family – not her family mind you, someone from her husband’s side.

Her dead husband’s family.

Life got complicated quite fast for Molly.

Molly loved David and David loved the country. So she packed up her life and moved for him and now he’s gone.

It doesn’t help that her children are sometimes considered responsible adults who visit.

Between the sheep that seem to be continuously ill, her gypsy mother that lives in the caravan behind her house and her attempts at selling retired (or rather lame) racehorses, Molly has some tough decisions to make.

The charming house she has indirectly inherited has a few tenants, but the walls hold secrets, as did the deceased uncle of David. Molly has a crotchety vet to contend with (why do her sheep keep dying?), the charismatic son of her tenant and the ghost of her husband looming over her.

It’s crunch time.

It was a humorous read for the most part, with a few eyebrow-raising moments. I would consider this as a wonderfully sweet read that ties itself up all of its lose ends with a neat little bow at its conclusion.
