This funny family affair will have you in stitches

They described their relationship as being 'close buddies' and they are honest with each other which helps them improve their sets on stage.

THE Flamboyant Park mother and son combo, Anasia and Kamalan ‘Kamz’ Govender, is igniting Durban with their jokes, food and hospitality.

They are both comedians who took to the stage by chance and with courage.

“It was accidental, I was singing at a pre-school function when I realised I had forgotten my backing-track at home, so I decided to tell some jokes, stories and sing. That is when I came up with the style I have now,” said Anasia.

Kamz was introduced to the comedy scene last year February, “My mom entered me into the On Fire comedy competition. I was a finalist and the companies started calling me for shows. Now I work with almost every promotion company in Durban. It was purely by chance, I thought I would make a better actor,” said the 22-year-old.

Not only is the 41-year-old Anasia an MC, a comedian and mother of three, she is also a chef in her own restaurant called Chilli Kadhai, just off North Coast Road, where she and her son spend most of their time.

Anasia performs under the stage name, Annalakshmi by adopting an Indian accent.

“I love entertaining people, I am always singing, even while I’m cooking, and that is why my food always has love in it and I am particular about the ingredients I use in my food,” said Anasia.

Kamz has described himself as very shy and says he uses his shyness in comedy, “I don’t get hyped up like most comedians. Off stage I am reserved and quiet,” he said.

When asked who is the funniest, they both pointed at each other.

“Kamz is the funniest, he can make anybody laugh, even if its not telling a joke. He was born to do this,” said Anasia.

But Kamz thinks his mum takes the trophy because she can slip into any character and do it very well.

They both look up to International comedian and host of the Daily Show, Trevor Noah.

With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, 14 May, Kamz would like to say this to her on this special day, “Mum you are a strong and inspirational woman and I can’t wait to see you motivate young women to believe in themselves like you do.”

What can you expect from the funny duo in the future? “I have started a gig at Ground Zero in Malvern on Wednesday nights, follow me on Facebook and Instagram for updates,” said Kamz.

“I want to start addressing social issues with my acts. I love singing different genres; I love Brenda Fassie and Yvonne Chaka Chaka so I want to try out more songs loved by South Africa as a whole,” said Anasia.
