Fabulous reads – Dark tale overflows with beauty

Book review - Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.

Three Dark Crowns, Kendare Blake, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781509804559

THERE are some books, not many I might add, that you know you will enjoy simply by seeing its cover or reading its synopsis.

For me, I knew I would enjoy Three Dark Crowns when I saw its name pop up on my screen at work.

Three triplets are torn apart from each other at a young age and are split into one of the three main factions on the island of Fennbirn.

Each one of these possible future queens has access to a significantly powerful magic and over the years these are honed, not to protect their kingdom, but to kill their fellow sisters.

Three queens are born but only one can reign.

Mirabella is born with the power to control the elements, poisoner Katherine can ingest any poison and not feel any of its effects while the third and final sister, Arsinoe is a naturalist and can bloom plants at the flick of a wrist and control the fiercest of beasts.

Before I picked up the novel I truly believed I knew which one of the sisters would come out triumphant, but after each passing chapter and getting to know them on a personal level, your allegiances will certainly change. Mine did.

This book is extremely fast-paced and is Game of Thrones for young adults.

While some may shun its darker scenes, I applaud its daring nature.

It is a book I have no regrets picking up as the characters are beautifully flawed, are completely different, there is personal growth in each one of the triplets and is fantastically written.

I honestly expected one thing from this novel, but what I received was something surprisingly different.

The second book in the trilogy should be out some time later this year and I will definitely keep an eye on the launch countdown clock.
