Avid gardeners to gather for book launch

Two South African authors will be launching their latest book at the Durban Botanic Gardens on 26 July.

AUTHORS Hugh Glen and Braam van Wyk will discuss their newly released book, Guide to Trees introduced into Southern Africa, at the Durban Botanic Gardens on 26 July from 10.30am.

The book is said to be an essential guide for landscapers, gardeners and tree enthusiasts.

South Africa is home to more than 2 000 introduced trees and this guide features nearly 600 of the most common and familiar of these. It facilitates ID based on leaf and stem attributes, provides the country of origin for each species and offers key information on cultivation and uses.

Hugh Glen worked as a scientist at the Botanical Research Institute (later SANBI) for 36 years and is a member of the IUBS Commission for the Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants. He has authored a number of publications and academic papers.

Braam van Wyk is a professor in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Pretoria. He is a plant taxonomist and has authored or co-authored numerous publications on the botany of southern Africa.

The event will take place at the visitor’s centre and parking is available off John Zikhali Road. RSVP to rsvp@penguinrandomhouse.co.za or contact 011 327 3550 before Friday, 22 July.
