STORY-teller, Gcina Mhlophe, presents her one-woman piece, My Travelling Bag, at The Rhumbelow Theatre’s Sunday Soirée Season on Sunday, 15 May.

From a young age, Gcina got to travel all over her home province, KZN, from her hometown, Hammarsdale, to Port Shepstone, Dundee and Nongoma, and they all seemed like such faraway places. She thought she was the most widely-travelled young person ever, but her beloved grandmother – Gogo – told her, “There is a bigger world out there,” – wise words indeed.

Over the past 33 years, Gcina has been blessed to travel the length and breadth of this amazing world.

“The amazing experiences, the countless mementos and memories fill my head like an enchanted African forest. There were amazing theatres, long hours at international airports, delayed flights, the many cultures and frustrating times filled with fear and homesickness. But nothing can top the joy of sharing the stories of my people on world stages, the magical universality of these stories, proving once and for all that people are more alike than different.

“In My Travelling Bag, there are stories about all the 33 years of international travelling, but they can only be told and shared one ‘bowl’ at a time,” said Gcina.

The show will be staged at 2pm and at 6.30pm on Sunday. Tickets cost R140 each or R120 for pensioners and block bookings of eight or more. The venue, situated at 42 Cunningham Road in Umbilo, opens 90 minutes before the show, so take a picnic basket. Braais will be available should you wish to cook some meat. Limited secure parking and bar available.

Booking is essential. Book through Computicket or contact Roland on 082 499 8636 or roland@stansell.za.net.
