Movie explores Irish Easter Rising

Book your seats to view rarely-seen archival footage of the Irish rebellion.

THE Irish South African Association, in partnership with the Embassy of Ireland, will host a Freedom Day movie evening on Wednesday, 27 April at the Westville Country Club from 2.30pm.

The association will be screening the 80-minute feature film, 1916 The Irish Rebellion, which is narrated by acclaimed actor and Irishman, Liam Neeson. The film’s creator, Prof Briona NicDhiarmada, from Notre Dame University in America will introduce the film and will host a question-and-answer session afterwards. The film was launched on 3 March this year and Briona is currently on world tour with the film, with Westville playing host to one of the launches.

“The film is not about bringing up old tensions, but to recognise where Ireland is after 100 years and where it will be going,” said Mandy Slabbert, chairman of the Irish South Africa Association. “The event is open to anyone who is interested in Ireland and its history. Come and be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime movie event and celebrate that first step to freedom in Ireland which inspired the search for freedom among oppressed people around the globe, including the freedom struggle in South Africa.

“The Irish South African Association exists to facilitate social contact between Irish people, people of Irish descent and anyone who has any interest whatsoever in the Irish and in Ireland. All are welcome to join the association,” said Mandy.

Tickets are R50 per person and include tea, coffee and snacks. A cash bar will be available. Contact Mandy on 083 628 2818 or e-mail members.dbn@ireland.co.za to book your seats.
