Hillcrest security guard realises acting dream

The local security guard said he was excited to act in his first movie.

AFTER being in the security industry for eight years, Patrick Mncwabe’s dream of becoming an actor was realised when he was offered a position in a locally-produced drama, Indoda Yegazi (‘The Blood Man’).

“Acting is my passion,” said the Molweni resident. “What was also amazing for me was that I helped to edit the movie as well.” He currently works as a security guards at Sandalwood Estate in Hillcrest.

The one-hour long film follows the protagonist, Xolani, through his journey of self-discovery as he is cast out from his home after disrespecting his mother. “My character is found sleeping in a bush by a herbalist who forces Xolani to take drugs. My character becomes an anti-hero, killing those who are doing evil deeds, from robbing innocents to cheating spouses,” said Patrick.

The film started production in 2010 and a 30-minute pilot was cut and shown to the Molweni public. A thumbs-up was given by the crowd to produce a full-length film. The film was completed in 2015 and the DVD was launched in late January this year. “Drugs are a huge problem where I come from and it is often the weak and the young who are targeted. This movie is about raising awareness of the affects of drugs and how they are killing the youth. We are in desperate need of a community centre in Molweni, a place where the youth have a positive outlet for their talents and give them something to do instead of turn to drugs and alcohol,” said Patrick.

He said they are currently selling it on the streets and that the movie aired on Mzanzi Magic (DSTV’s channel 161) in January. “I am so excited to have this movie out there. My favourite scenes were the ones where I took on the role of the anti-hero, getting into that head space,” said Patrick.

Steven Makhaye, the director and editor, said they are looking at making part two of the movie but are having equipment trouble.
