Westville roads close for cycle race

Main roads in and around the Westville area will be closed this weekend, Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 14 February.

THE 2016 SA National Road Race Championships, which is expecting to see some of the country’s biggest names in cycling at the start line, will be taking place in the Westville area this weekend.

The time-trial and the para-cycling divisions will be hosted in the Wartburg/Noodsburg/Harburg area until 12 February, with the road races taking place in Westville from 13 to 14 February. Great cycling stars will be heading to the Highway area to compete for their chance to claim the title of national champion.

Road race organiser, Kelvin du Sart, has ensured that full road closure is in place for Cycling South Africa’s blue-ribbon event to ensure the safety of its cyclists throughout the race. Cycling SA encouraged residents and visitors to plan alternative routes beforehand.

Road race route M13 Westville – Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 14 February:

The 18km loop for the road race starts on the M13 west-bound, 250 metres after the Blair Athol off-ramp. The route continues along the M13, to where the M13 meets the M13 off-ramp from the N3. The cyclists will then make a U-turn and head back on the M13 east-bound all the way to 45th Cutting. At the 45th Cutting traffic lights, they will make another make a U-turn and head onto the M13 west-bound to the start/finish in Westville (18km circuit).

Intersections affected with alternative routes:

From the east:

Essex Terrace, University Road (Westwood Mall): There will be an allocated lane from and to this turn off from Sydenham robot (45th Cutting).

Rockdale Avenue, Jan Hofmeyr Road: No-name road (into Glendale Ave), 300 metres before Queens Avenue and Salisbury Avenue turn-off.

Queens Avenue, Salisbury Avenue: Attercliffe Road, Blair Athol Road (Rodger Sishi Road).

From the west:

Westville, Blair Athol Road (Rodger Sishi Road): Salisbury Avenue, Queens Avenue.

Rockdale Avenue, Janhofmeyr Road: Essex Terrace, University Road (Westwood Mall).
