‘Guys and Dolls’ celebrates Broadway’s golden era

Book your seat now to see Westville Boys' High School's premiére production for 2015, 'Guys and Dolls', from 31 July to 8 August.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School proudly presents its première production for 2015, a fitting tribute to its 60th anniversary, Guys and Dolls from 31 July to 8 August.

Bustling with gamblers, gangsters, and sassy showgirls, Guys and Dolls celebrates Broadway’s golden era with one of the greatest scores ever written for a musical by the legendary Frank Loesser, masterfully witty lyrics by Joe Swerling and comedy legend, Abe Burrows, and the glorious Damon Runyon’s comic book world of 1940s Times Square New York City.

Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls introduces audiences to a cast of characters who have become legends in the musical theatre world. Frank Loesser’s toe-tapping score, including fan favourites such as Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat, and I’ve Never Been In Love Before, is the perfect music to complement Runyon’s colourful characters.

Guys and Dolls originally conquered Broadway in 1951, running for 1 200 performances and winning five Tony Awards, including Best New Musical. It was subsequently made into the beloved film starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra in 1955. Sixty years later, Westville Boys’ High School brings it to life in living colour, with a 24-piece brass band and an ensemble cast of 60.

It features matric pupil, Tristan Robertson, as the irrepressible gambler, Nathan Detroit, Jaime Montgomery as Miss Adelaide, Nathan’s long-suffering girlfriend and principal performer at The Hot Box Club, Grant Millar as Sky Masterson, a suave businessman and compulsive gambler and Rachel Scrooby as Sergeant Sarah Brown, the sweet and innocent leader of the Mission Band who is determined to save the souls of all the gamblers in New York City.

The production is directed and choreographed by celebrated Westville teachers, Luke Holder and Fiona Barnes, and features lighting and sound designs by award-winning Durban designers, Mike Broderick and Megan Levy.

Ticket prices range from R60 to R80. All evening performances start at 7pm and matinées at 2pm.

There are special supper theatre performances on Friday, 7 August at 7pm, Saturday, 8 August at 2pm and again at 7pm, for which tickets cost R100. For bookings, contact the school on 031 267 1330 or e-mail tickets@wbhs.co.za.
