DON’T miss the Crescendo Live Music benefit gig at the Roy Couzens Auditorium at Westville Boys’ High School this Sunday, 26 April.

It is a packed programme of some of Durban’s hottest and most loved artists, who have stepped up to the plate in support of a young up-and-coming artist, Seth Parkin. All of the artists involved have performed with and contributed to the development of one of Durban’s most highly regarded young drummers – Seth Parkin.

Seth Parkin is known to many in Durban’s music circles as the ‘young drummer monster’, who was once part of the successful young band New Hysteria. They started the band at about 14 years old. As he and the other members grew older, Aury Livingstone, himself now a rising star as a solo artist, and Pascal Koch took the changes of life in their stride and are now pursuing their own musical interests.

Seth is now the drummer for the band Carnage Carnival, and has recently started performing as a duo again on occasion with Aury Livingstone.

Drumming for Carnage Carnival is a complete turn in genre from his early years. He is making great progress with the opportunity afforded him, yet he is still a music student who has a few years of college ahead of him.

“I really want to do this for my Dad’s birthday – he turned 60 last month. When I asked him what he wanted, he said he wanted to see me perform with all the artists I had played with since I started at the age of 13,” said Seth.

He said his dad has been his roadie since he started, and has only missed two gigs he played since then. He is also grateful to all the artists on the bill for this gig.

“Their support means a lot and they have volunteered their time and talent to help me out. Knowing Durban musos, I shouldn’t have been surprised – supporting each other is second nature. I cannot wait to perform again with those who gave me a chance to share the stage with them, and proudly show them off to my family too, for they are the ones who generously gave up their time and expertise to teach me,” said Seth.

Seth is also a former Westville Boys’ High School pupil, and his music teacher then, Luke Holder, invested a lot in the trio that formed New Hysteria back in the day.

Crescendo offers a cross pollination of music and musicians from all corners of Durban. The genres and styles are across the board, and various musical tastes will be catered for – from the ‘petal’ sounds of the 60s folk music to the thunder of modern metal. Along with Seth Parkin, the evening’s lineup includes Aury Livingstone, Ross Tapson, Jason Andrew, John Chamier, The Collective Cartel, Grant Halliday, Andy Turrell, John Skuy, Salty Dog, Sarah, Jason Frau, Nicole Couto-Leite and Bookendz, Will Wallace, Carnage Carnival and more.

The event kicks off at 6pm. Tables of eight can be booked in advance by calling Marywin on 083 288 1386 and cost R80 each. Tickets purchased at the door on the night will cost R90 each, and in all likelihood the will offer limited cinema-styled seating so pre-booking is advised. Parking is plentiful and safe. Take along a picnic basket.
