Book your tickets now.

IT’S Swingtime at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway when local group, Platform Jazz, bring audiences the best of swing music from the 30s, 40s and 50s on Sunday 12 April.

The show will feature hits by Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Ella Fitzgerald, with songs such as Hey Mambo, Blue Moon, Embraceable You and L-O-V-E. The band will pay tribute to great big bands of the time with numbers like Sing Sing Sing, Caravan, How High The Moon and a tribute to Glenn Miller. Other fabulous swing tunes on the repertoire for the evening include I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Fly Me To The Moon and a smoky version of Georgia On My Mind. A show-stopper is the band’s own version of the current hit, All About That Bass.

The band Platform Jazz was formed in 1990 by Cathy Peacock, and were so named as their first performance was on the platform at the Durban Station, playing for the Rovos Rail steam train. Originally just a Dixieland jazz band, they have expanded and now play different styles of jazz including Dixie, swing, and Latin. Since 2011 they have become more of a show band and have, over the years, performed at a number of venues and theatres in and around KwaZulu-Natal.

At present the band members are Cathy Peacock on trumpet, band leader Duncan Wooldridge on trombone, Jeff Judge on alto saxophone, Kirsten Sayers on clarinet, Andreas Kappen on double bass, Melvin Peters on piano, Bruce Baker on drums and Shelley McLean on vocals.

If it’s class, sophistication and good, old-fashioned nostalgia that you are after, don’t miss seeing these excellent musicians in action.

The theatre will open at 6pm, the show will start at 7.30pm and tickets are R100 each. For bookings, contact The Barnyard Theatre on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatres.co.za or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za for more information.
