THE KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has congratulated the matric class of 2014. She has singled out the Umlazi District, which Queensburgh schools fall under, for obtaining a 77 per cent pass rate, which is the highest pass rate among the province’s districts. Dube-Ncube is the champion of the Ethekwini Metro, under which Umlazi falls, and during the past matric exams she visited various schools to ensure that books had been delivered on time so that learning and teaching could start on first day of school. She also inspected the progress of matric exams in many schools around Durban to satisfy herself that the exams were proceeding smoothly.

“I would like to thank all the education stakeholders in the province, but I would like to mention MEC for Education Peggy Nkonyeni in particular for her leadership in the implementation of the new curriculum. Yes, we may have dropped, but we must take into account that our government has introduced a new curriculum. I am optimistic that this year we will definitely get accustomed to it because our government’s intention is to improve the quality of education. To me, every one of the matriculants is a winner, and I am urging everyone in the province to lend a hand in ensuring that our children are benefiting from the new curriculum and that we come first next year,” said Dube-Ncube.

She has urged all matriculants who failed to achieve university admission to consider other alternatives of furthering their education. She maintained that this country needs artisans, nurses, paramedics and the like, and those who did not pass still have got a bright future ahead of them through FET colleges.
