The Hobbit burns up SA box office

The Hobbit trilogy goes out with a bang.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the third installment of the Hobbit ignited the South African box office over the weekend as the second biggest industry opening weekend for 2014.

The highly anticipated final film in Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson’s acclaimed “The Hobbit” Trilogy based on a novel by J.R.R. Tolkien earned R6,006,744 million on 115 screens, including 3 IMAX theatres.

It opened 142% bigger than The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s opening weekend and 120% bigger than “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s opening weekend.

It is also the sixth biggest Warner Bros. Film opening weekend of all time. The announcement was made today by Driki van Zyl, general manager of Times Media Films.

Like the first two films in the Trilogy, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” was released in High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D) in select theaters, other 2D and 3D formats, and IMAX®.

Driki van Zyl stated, “This is the film audiences across South Africa have been waiting for and truly an event for all moviegoers and ‘Hobbit’ fans. We congratulate Peter Jackson, his iconic cast and behind-the-scenes team for delivering such an epic and satisfying conclusion to this incredible 13-year cinematic journey to Middle-earth.”
