DURBAN University of Technology’s drama and production studies department pays tribute to Prof Deborah Arlene Lutge’s 25 years of passionate commitment to DUT with Reunion – a programme of contemporary dance in the newly-refurbished Courtyard Theatre from 25 to 28 August.

Reunion showcases second and third year theatre dance specialists in five new works by Durban based choreographers, Mdu Mtshali, Mlekeleli Khuzwayo, Sifiso Khumalo, Sifiso Majola, in a programme co-ordinated and directed by dance lecturer Mdu Mtshali.

“Our 2014 annual season of contemporary dance, Reunion, offers works inspired by Prof Lutge’s 25 years of passionate commitment. Prof Lutge is known as an academic with the highest integrity, who combines motherly compassion, and transparent honesty, with an openness that has offered wisdom to many,” said Mtshali.

Prof Lutge is currently the associate professor in the drama studies programme.

“As the core of the department of drama and performance studies, her leadership has been exemplary and her focus on education a mastery of ‘leading by example’ through her unparalleled discipline, artistic genius and professionalism. As a performance graduate, then award-winning choreographer- turned lecturer, I began to realise that she has empowered individual artists to achieve an uncompromising uniqueness in their art, because her own artistic brilliance is all encompassing and filled with such a deep love of her craft that we leave carrying with us unique gifts,” added Mtshali.

Reunion is a one-week event which celebrates the enduring strengths and traditional values of the drama studies programme.

“It aims to cement our bonds and celebrate our existence by exploring past connections with ex-students celebrating their growth and success in the industry, and just a quick reminder of where they started,” said Mtshali.

The show is on at 7pm daily. Tickets cost R40 each. To book, contact 031 373 2194.
