Woman set on fire in Kloof ‘critical’

A woman is alleged to have set herself alight in Kloof yesterday afternoon.

A 30-YEAR-OLD woman is in critical condition after being set alight on Old Main Road in Kloof yesterday afternoon.

According to Russel Meiring and Derrick Banks, media spokesmen for ER24, when paramedics arrived at the scene the woman was first doused by fire extinguishers before they could begin treatment. A few bystanders were said to have also gathered around the unconscious young woman.

She had first degree burns over 90 per cent of her body and advanced life support was needed to stabilise her vital signs. She was then transported to RK Khan hospital and was still in critical condition. “The survival rate of someone who has received burns on 90 per cent on their body is very low,” said Banks.

At the time the incident occurred the woman was with her fiancé. There is suspicion of an attempted suicide but the local SAPS were at the scene and will be investigating.
