Student musos team up for evening of music

The VCU Africa Combo and UKZN Asihambe Ensemble team up for a once-off performance at UKZN's Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

GO along to an evening of great music with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Africa Combo and the UKZN Asihambe Jazz Ensemble at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at Level 2, Shepstone Building, UKZN Howard College on Wednesday 12 March at 6pm.

The two universities began their second year of the partnership with a shared concert in America at the Vlahcevic Concert Hall, Singleton Centre last October. The concert featured newly formed ensembles from each university, the VCU Africa Combo and the UKZN Asihambe Jazz Ensemble.

The UKZN Asihambe Ensemble includes Thobeka Langa (vocal), Bethual Tshoane (guitar), Sibusiso Mashiloane (piano), Ildo Nandja (bass), Bryan Stone (drums), George Mari (trumpet) and director Neil Gonsalves (piano).

VCU’s musical team includes Trey Sorrells (alto sax), Cody Reifsteck (tenor sax), Roger Pouncey Jr. (guitar), Ryan Moses (piano), Justin Esposito (bass), and Cleandré Foster (drums) with director Prof. Antonio Garcia (trombone).

The Leap of Faith CD will be on sale. The CD features last year’s UKZN Jazz Legacy Ensemble, along with the VCU Africa Combo. The two ensembles combined to perform with guest artists Plunky Branch (soprano sax) and Madala Kunene (guitar and vocals) on compositions by those artists.

The CD features commission works written for them by students and faculty from the other school – composers Stephan le Roux and Dr Sazi Dlamini from UKZN and Victor Haskins and Prof. Antonio Garcia from VCU. New arrangements from VCU and UKZN students round out the recording.

Entry fee is R40 each, R20 for pensioners and R15 for students. Contact Thuli on 031 260 3385 or e-mail: Zamat1@ukzn.ac.za
