Armed forces showcase their defence arsenal

Durban Land, Sea and Air Festival boasts a line-up of a number of displays from the South African armed forces on the beachfront on 21 and 22 March.

THE city is preparing for the first Durban Land, Sea and Air Festival, on the 21 and 22 March.

With the line-up almost 100 per cent confirmed, festival organisers are excited to reveal that among the aircraft and vessels to be seen on Durban’s Beachfront will be a number of displays from the South African armed forces.

Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, recently appealed to her generals and admirals that more needs to be done to promote the armed forces. Festival organiser, Brian Emmenis, said, festival organisers were responding to the minister’s call and feel showcasing what the armed forces have in their defence arsenal at the Durban Land, Sea and Air Festival will create awareness of the SANDF’s important role.

The South African Valour Class Frigates are the South African Navy’s major surface ships. The navy currently has four in its fleet, one of which will be exhibited at the festival. A submarine (subject to operational availability) has also been added to the line-up. The navy divers will also be in attendance.

For those who like the drama of low flying military helicopters, the South African Air Force will do demonstrations with their Oryx and new Super Lynx helicopters. Both helicopters will showcase their capabilities and be on standby in the event of an emergency.

Coming all the way from Langebaan Air Force Base, the Silver Falcons, the air force’s official display team, will wow the crowds with their world-class aerobatic manoeuvers. The Golden Eagles, the air force’s crack sky diving team, will also make an appearance.

In addition to the armed forces, the NSRI will be there with their mother ship and semi-rigids to perform the dual function of a capability demonstration as well as providing a rapid response rescue service at the festival. They will be supported by members of the SAPS police rescue divers and members of SAPS’ water wing.

To add to the atmosphere, land attractions include live bands, magicians, clowns, stilt walkers, jugglers, mimes, unicyclists, fire jugglers and face painters. Two big screens situated on the piers will televise all the action. For those who prefer to be seated, organisers have arranged grandstands with seating available to the public. To avoid disappointment tickets for this seating area will be sold prior to the event but entry to the rest of the area is free.
