Drumming legend brings jazzy rhythms to Durban

Jazz percussionist Tlale Makhene will perform in three shows in Durban next month.

ONE of South Africa’s most remarkable drumming talents, percussionist Tlale Makhene is set to perform at three different venues in Durban this October.

Born in Soweto, Tlale moved to Swaziland at a young age and began drumming at the age of four. He’s been in the music business for about 20 years.

Highly regarded by musicians and musical fans alike, he’s been featured in more than 300 jazz and world music albums and is a much sought after indigenous music teacher, session musician and performer.

His debut album, Ascension of The Enlightened won the 2005 MTN SAMA award for best contemporary jazz album.

In Durban, Tlale’s band will consist of Bongani Sokhela on bass guitar, Paki Peloeole on drums and Sibu Mashiloane on keys. The performances are supported by Concerts SA and SAMRO Foundation.

He will perform at Afriporico at the Bat Centre in Durban on Sunday 6 October at 2pm, alongside all-female jazz band, Heels over Head .Tickets cost R60 each.

His next gig will be at UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday 9 October. Tickets are R35 each, R20 for pensioners and R10 for UKZN students.

His final gig is at the KZNSA Gallery in Glenwood on Friday 11 October at 6pm. Tickets are R60 each. Bookings through 031 201 9969.
