Local karateka kick it up a gear

The two students from IFFSKSA Westville Virgin Active Karate Dojo recently claimed top spots in an international virtual competition.

WITH the restriction of contact since March last year, Ashley Thomas and Michael Schwartz recently participated in the 2021 Virtual Karate World International Kata Competition and excelled.

The entrants included participants from more than 32 countries, with a group of top international judges overseeing the event.

At the conclusion of the series, Ashley was ranked fifth in the female advanced elite 14- to 16-year-old division and Michael Schwartz was ranked second in the boys advanced elite 8- to 10-year-old division.

Both students train through the IFFSKSA Westville Virgin Active Karate Dojo, run by Sensei Brian and Sensei Mishelle Govender. Ashley has trained under the duo since 2013 and Michael since 2016.

Ashley said the competition was of a high standard and it was exciting for both her and Michael to participate against top-level black belt opponents.

“Sensei Brian and Mishelle have shown continued dedication and support for us, the students, at their karate dojos. Thank you,” she said.
