The Goals4Gogos fundraiser saw more than 100 golfers take to the greens at the Kloof Country Club.

DESPITE the wet and windy conditions, more than 100 golfers gathered at the Kloof Country Club recently to support the Kloof Round Table 190’s third annual Charity Golf Day in aid of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT).

Sponsored by Grindrod Logistics, this year’s event was originally set to take place in April, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and national lockdown.

Aptly entitled Goals4Gogos, the event raised more than R65 000 on the day.

The funds will be used to enable 20 local grandmothers from HACT’s Gogo Support Groups programme to participate in a six-month sewing course and receive their very own sewing machine.

The classes are held at one of the organisation’s three community-based sewing schools located in the Valley of 1 000 Hills.

Kloof Round Tabler, Matthew Helm, said, “HACT’s dedication to uplifting and empowering local gogos is truly inspiring and their sewing project is one that has become incredibly close to the hearts of the Kloof Round Tablers in the past three years. We are very proud that, regardless of the bad weather on the day, our sponsors and players still helped us raise these much-needed funds this year.”

HACT’s Gogo Support Groups Programme currently provides psychosocial support as well as practical and sustainable skills development, training and economic empowerment opportunities to a network of more than 2 000 gogos in over 70 support groups across 13 communities.

HACT’s CEO, Candace Davidson, said, “The Round Table’s support in the past two years has already transformed many lives, giving local gogos the opportunity to not only learn a practical new skill, but gain a new found sense of pride and dignity in being able to feed and clothe their families. On behalf of the HACT team and our many gogos, we thank them wholeheartedly for their hard work and perseverance in making this year’s event such a big success!”

Kirsten van Staden and Zama Zondi, from Dykes van Heerden Attorneys, show their support at a snack stand.
Travis Scott, Dave Alvarrao, Gareth Burn and Ryan Van Der Merwe make some time for a quick cuppa.
Nithesh Maharaj and James Sukhessan from Grindrod Logistics are ready to tee off.
Despite the chilly weather, Craig Blitenthall, Kevin White, Ian Brake and Grant Acklom were eager to compete in the fundraiser.
