Virtual run draws overseas participants

THE Blue and You Autism Awareness virtual run/walk was a huge success with 619 entrants from 13 countries worldwide.

The race participants included families, people on the autism spectrum as well as athletes and residents from the various areas.

The runners and walkers made up the majority, but there were also horse riders, cyclists, a roller derby team on skates as well as drive-through participants who put their race numbers on their car windows and drove around to raise awareness.

Caz Collins, a behavioural therapist from the organisation, said they received an overwhelmingly positive response from people around South Africa who immediately asked if they could host the virtual part of the run again next year even if Covid-19 restrictions are lifted for groups.

“We featured a live start and prize giveaway event on Facebook.”

Collins said they were elated to provide professional on-line registration, race timing and race numbers to the participants.

“All participants had personalised race numbers with their names on it and were able to download a certificate with their name once they entered their finish time to the event timing link. The KZN Department of Sports and Recreation sponsored medals.”

Collins added that should group gatherings still be restricted in April 2021, they will host the virtual event again only bigger and better.
