Hillcrest Villagers’ Athletics Club stays on the right path

The Hillcrest Villagers' Athletics Club encourages all runners, walkers and cyclists to follow the rule set for level 4 lockdown.

THE Hillcrest Villagers’ Athletics Club encourages runners across the Durban area to follow the rules when going out for their morning exercise between 6am and 9am each day.

The club’s chairman, Marc Allen, said, “Under level 5 lockdown, no exercise was permitted outside of one’s own residence and property. For people in small houses, informal settlements and in complexes, this was extremely challenging.”

Under level 4 lockdown, residents are allowed to exercise outside of their homes, within a 5km radius, between 6am and 9am. In addition, social distancing must be exercised and people can only run, cycle or walk alone or with people they live with. A buff or face mask must be worn at all times.

“This caused some serious consternation among the running community. There has been loads of arguing, name calling and judging on various social media platforms, particularly Facebook. Some of it has been really negative and harsh.

“We decided to put a positive spin on it and encouraged our members to follow the rules and send in photos of them doing so, with no negativity at all. It is at times like this that we need to stick together and be united. This was our little way of trying to achieve this, even if just to some extent,” said Marc.
