Kearsney continues to bag wins

The school's rugby and hockey sides claimed wins in their recent games against Clifton.

Rugby

KEARSNEY hosted Clifton College in Botha’s Hill on a hot summer’s afternoon.

Kearsney scored first from a rehearsed shortened line out attack. Clifton responded with a field penalty. The second try came from a quick penalty tap from Kearsney prop Cameron van Eck. Scrummie Luke du Toit converted for a 12 – 3 lead after 25 minutes of play.

Kearsney attacked from the kick off and centre Connor De Bruyn carried well with outstanding inter-play. Hooker Ulrich Botha did some good work in the wide channels for Luke Dudley to score while Du Toit converted for a 19 – 3 lead.

Clifton had an opportunity to shrink the lead, but the school’s winger stepped on the dead-ball line and cost the team a seven-pointer. Kearsney reacted quickly to the 22m drop out and advanced to the opponents 5m line. Kearsney stole the lineout possession and its prop scored a try from a 5m pick-and-go. The half time score was 24 – 3 to Kearsney.

The second half did not produce the same quality of rugby as there were many distractions and injuries. The hosts also squandered opportunities with poor handling and decision making. Kearsney’s hooker Botha scored a try after a lineout error by the visitors. Clifton responded with a converted try. The scores were locked in at 29 – 10 for the remainder of the match.

Hockey

THE game between Kearsney and Clifton was heated as the two teams had not faced each other for a few seasons.

Clifton came out to prove a point and controlled most of the 1st chukka. Even though Kearsney has a young side, their experience definitely played a big part in the game as they continued to absorb the pressure.

Kearsney went 1 – 0 up through a great penalty corner from Calvin Davis and controlled the game in the second chukka. Numerous chances were created and a score was finally added to the board through the man of the match, Calvin Davis.

A moment of brilliance from Kearsney’s Campbell Duckworth set up the third goal, where Gonste Machaba was on hand to score and put the game to bed. Kearsney beat Clifton 4 – 1.
