Paddlers prep for Non-Stop Dusi

If Sbonelo Khwela wins the 2020 edition of the Non-Stop Dusi, he will be the first person to claim 10 wins in the gruelling race.

FOLLOWING on from the Dusi Canoe Marathon, endurance paddlers are gearing up to tackle the annual Garden City Commercials Non-Stop Dusi on Friday, 13 March.

The unique event has become a staple in the post-Dusi season as paddlers are still in good shape after the three-day epic from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

When compared to the Dusi, this race follows a bare minimum set of rules and gives the paddlers a lot of liberty. While they can opt for longer portages and cut out sections of the river that make the course shorter, it also places greater demands on the participants’ running strength.

The one rule is that participants have to go under the College Road Bridge at the start and pass through a few compulsory check points.

Should Sbonelo Khwela take on the challenge again, and cross the finish line first, he will be the first paddler to win the Non-Stop Dusi 10 times.

Khwela has won the race, either in a K1 or K2, for the last seven years in a row and has become the undisputed king of the Non-Stop Dusi.

This year it is expected that paddlers will receive some much-needed assistance from water releases from Henly Dam and from Inanda Dam.
