Kearsney courts basketball victory

The local school managed to claim a basketball win against Clifton but its water polo and cricket teams lost to the visiting school.

Basketball

KEARSNEY College hosted Clifton for the fourth round of schools’ basketball fixtures.

The opening quarter saw Kearsney do most of the playing but failed to convert their opportunities into points. Clifton made the most of their limited opportunities and scored whenever they shot the ball. The quarter ended with the teams deadlocked at 8-apiece.

Kearsney found rhythm on offence during the second quarter and opened up a four-point lead going into the half time break 21 – 17 ahead.

The local team broke open the game during the third quarter and played good basketball and looked as if they would finish off their opponents as they had amassed a 14-point lead.

The fourth quarter fizzled out as both teams made poor decisions on offence and did not make their baskets. Kearsney had done enough to come out as the clear winners with a 13-point margin and a final score of 59 – 46.

Cricket

THE result of the Kearsney-Clifton 1st team 45-over game was dictated by the toss. After heavy rain during the week and overcast conditions, Riverside’s green top had the seamers on both sides eager with anticipation.

Clifton won the toss and didn’t hesitate to put Kearsney in to bat. Clifton’s seamers had the batsmen under the cosh as Kearsney lost wickets at regular intervals. The pick of the seamers were R. Vardaya (2/17 in 7) and J. Platford (1/21 in 9).

Not to be outdone, the spinners also extracted turn and bounce with M. Mottura (2/30 in 9) and R. Montgomery (2/2 in 1) doing significant damage.

An interesting run-out, which was later repeated in the Clifton innings, added to the drama. Only Rubin Rheeder (34) and Dylan Hulett (28) managed some resistance in the difficult conditions as they faced a very competent attack. Kearsney were skittled for 113 in 37 overs.

By the afternoon, the wicket had flattened out in the sun and wind and the conditions improved for batting. Kearsney refused to go down without a fight though and made Clifton work hard for their runs.

Dean Gibbs (3/22 in 9) and Joshua Stocks (1/9 in 9) kept the batsmen honest and Clifton eventually passed the target in the 35th over seven down, with N. Jeewa scoring a match-winning 57. It was Kearsney’s first defeat in 10 outings.

Water polo

Kearsney played host to Clifton on Saturday for a much-anticipated clash.

Fresh from a tournament in Grahamstown, Clifton quickly settled into their stride. Kearsney created some good scoring chances in the first half, but were ultimately undone by solid defence and the wrong options were taken a few too many times. Clifton punished each mistake to take the score to 1 – 7 at the halftime break.

Kearsney College came out strong in the 3rd chukka as they showed composure and heart and clawed back into the game with the score at 4 – 8, with one more chukka to play.

Many lessons were learnt but Clifton was the stronger team on the day and won the match 12 – 5.
