Massive prize purse on offer for 2020’s Quattro ROAG Series

Last year's MTB riders each claimed R25 000 bonuses for winning the 10-part series.

THE 2020 Quattro ROAG Series heads into its ninth year as KwaZulu-Natal’s premier mountain biking and trail running event and once again promises major prize money to competitors.

The series is made up of 10 of the province’s most popular trail running and mountain biking events and will kick off with the Illovo Wartburg MTB Classic and Trail Run this weekend. The series concludes with the Safire Baynesfield MTB and Trail in September, after which the prize winners are honoured at an awards dinner.

In 2019, the runaway winners of the mountain bike series were Tyronne White and Christie Hearder, while the men’s and women’s trail running series winners were Nomore Mandivengerei and Sarah Gray.

Tyronne and Christie each collected R25 000 bonuses at the series prize giving as they both ended the series with the maximum of 600 points. Nomore and Sarah ended the year on 514 and 572 points respectively and took home the trail running prizes.

The winners are decided on a Grand Prix-style points system, where each rider is required to compete in at least six of the series’ events and the results are based on the best six results. Elite riders take part in events from 40km to 65km while other age categories take part in the 15km to 65km races. The trail runners compete mostly over distances from 8km up to 25km.

Tyronne and Christie were confirmed as the mountain bike winners long before the final event, and Sarah secured the trail running title before the start of the final event in 2019. For Nomore it was a case of calculators and nervous maths before he was confirmed as the winner at the final event.

The event started in 2012 and the ten-event series now offers R25 000 prize money for both the overall winning male and female athletes in the mountain biking category, and R10 000 for the top trail runners in both men’s and women’s classes.

The series is however not only about the elite athletes, with all age categories being rewarded. The top three winners in all age categories (for both mountain biking and trail running) will receive prize money and a gift at the annual awards dinner in October.

The top schools also compete for an inter-schools prize. Prize money of R5 000 goes to both the winning high school and top primary school in the school’s challenge. Points are awarded to schools for each learner who crosses the finish line. This ensures that the top schools are rewarded for participation as well as for the best riders and runners.
