Trail runners tackle gruelling race

The annual event is hosted to help raise much-needed funds for the Kwa-Ximba Conservancy.

ADDED to the challenge faced by the hundreds of runners who competed in this year’s Kwa-Ximba Trail Run were the exceptionally hot conditions.

The route took runners along the Umgeni River and, for the 22km runners, a tough but rewarding climb to the top of isiThumba Mountain.

The event is a fund-raiser for the Kwa-Ximba Conservancy that operates in a seriously economically deprived area along the Dusi and Umgeni Rivers near Cato Ridge.

The funds are used for environmental education at local schools and to engage the community on issues of irresponsible solid waste dumping, illegal hunting and the protection of the biodiversity in the area.

The event is run in partnership with the Kloof Conservancy as it provides administrative and logistical support while the Kwa-Ximba Conservancy ensures the safety of the trail and provides the marshals on the day.

The event was supported by Dunbar’s SuperSPAR, 32Gi Endure Sports Drink and GCS Environmental Consultants.
