Durban’s silver surfer goes for gold

The talented 12-year-old claimed a silver at SA Camps but hopes to claim a gold medal at the KZN Champs at the end of November.

GABI Herbst recently claimed a second place at the SA Champs and a gold at the Billabong Pro Junior Seal Point events.

The 12-year-old said she competed in her best heat at the Seals event as the competition was tough with a neck-in-neck battle for first place.

“As they say, winners don’t quit,” said the determined Kloof Senior Primary School learner.

The event was held over three days and her highest score was eight.

The SA Champs was held over a one-week period in Jeffreys Bay, one of Gabi’s favourite places to surf. She described the conditions as tough but was excited to be reunited with her friends from different districts. “It was so much fun to hang out with the ESA team,” she said.

“I want to become a professional surfer and make it my career because I know that if I work hard enough, I can be the best that I can be and make my dream come true,” she said.

Gabi will compete again in the KZN Champs from 30 November to 1 December at St Mike’s Beach South Coast.

The talented surfer thanked her sponsors O’Neill South Africa, Lost Surf Boards South Africa, Maisch Fins and Casio South Africa.
