Mixed bag of results for Kearsney

The local school claimed a win in its basketball match but narrowly missed wins in its cricket and water polo games.

Basketball

KEARSNEY hosted Hilton College in the penultimate basketball game of the 2019 season. It started with a fast and furious exchange of baskets, before the pace seemed to fizzle as the teams executed their game plans.

Hilton had the best of the first quarter early exchanges but Kearsney applied better defensive pressure in the second part of the quarter. They scored a few easy baskets off Hilton’s lapse in defence. The quarter ended 12 – 6 in Kearsney’s favour.

The second quarter saw a resurgence from Hilton, while Kearsney’s side was unable to respond on defensive or offensive ends. Hilton won the second quarter 12 – 11.

Kearsney regrouped at half time and came out focussed and took command of the match and won the third (17 – 9) and fourth (17 – 12) quarters. Kearsney won the match 57 – 39 and continued its home win record.

Cricket

Kearsney College faced a formidable foe in the powerful Hilton outfit on Saturday and decided to take the bull by the horns and bat first after they secured the toss.

Kearsney started well and were 61/1 off just five overs, with an aggressive 48 off 30 balls from Louis Nel. However, the sheer pace of M. Booth (3/52) and J. Turner (5/37) was a major factor. The tight spin bowling of C. Dyer also played a role on a flat deck as free scoring was restricted.

A patient 57 from Dylan Hulett was the only other contribution from a batting side under siege.

Hilton set about their task with real intent and set a target of 177 in 45 overs. They made the necessary runs in 27 overs with fine knocks from C. Meyer (65*) and N. Hatton (59).

Water polo
Kearsney’s 1st water polo team played in the Northwood Knight Stayers tournament over the weekend.

Buoyed by their recent success in making the top 10 final, they were keen to gauge if the stayers could live up to the high standards set by the 2019 team.

Kearsney made a good start on Friday and beat the invitational and Glenwood teams 12 – 5 and 10 – 7, respectively. This set them up for Saturday games against their opponents from the Top 10 quarter final (Maritzburg College) and final (Clifton).

A dominant performance against Maritzburg College in the morning saw them run out 10 – 6 winners, followed by a well-disciplined 7 – 3 win against Clifton, who were missing several players. This put Kearsney on course to play the hosts in the semis.

Clifton set up a rematch with Kearsney for the quarter final. Clifton pushed Kearsney all the way but the local side was too strong and booked their place in the final by completing their double over Clifton 7 – 5.

The final was between Kearsney and Reddam Helderburg who had cruised through their matches, winning each by six or more goals. Reddam held on for a 7 – 6 win.

Kearsney’s goalkeeper Brett van Noordwyk was named as the best goalkeeper and their captain, Tyson Andrews, was named as Kearsney’s most valuable player.
