Action-packed tourney draws crowds

More than 100 basketball games were played at the recent Independent Schools Stayers Basketball Tournament, hosted by Kearsney College.

KEARSNEY College hosted the 7th edition of the Independent Schools Stayers Basketball Tournament recently and saw Michaelhouse claim the A-division victory while the St Stithians’ second team claimed the B-division win.

Each of the country’s top independent basketball-playing schools participated and a B-division was introduced this year to give more teams access to the event.

The games were exciting and highly competitive as the teams competed in two pools and played in a round robin format. The top four in each pool then advanced to quarter finals. A total of 101 games were played during the four days.

In the A-division final, Michaelhouse narrowly beat Kearsney 48 – 46 in a fantastic match that had the crowd riveted until the final second. Kearsney missed two shots at the basket and Michaelhouse scored a breakaway lay-up to claim victory.

St Charles beat St Stithians 47 – 24 in the third and fourth place play-off.
The B-division final was equally exciting as St Nicholas made a strong run at the end of the game to almost emerge victorious. In the end, it was St Stithians’ second team that was able to hang on to its slender lead and emerge as the victors with a final score of 64 – 60.

The tournament has benefited from the tremendous growth of basketball in the independent schools over the past few years and is fast becoming one of the country’s premier tournaments as the winners claim significant bragging rights for their schools.
