Paddlers unite for an ‘oarsome’ cause

To show their support against gender-based violence, the local canoe club transformed its recent dices into a collaborative effort.

AHEAD of each of the big three canoeing events in South Africa, the SMG Toyota Hillcrest Umzinyathi Canoe Club, based at Shongwei Dam, hosts a series of training events (dices) that are open to all paddlers.

To show their support against gender-based violence, the club opted to switch things up with their recent dices.

“A group of our top paddlers suggested that instead of paddling with their usual partners, they rather show support against gender-based abuse and violence by inviting our female paddlers to team up with them for the next dice. This is the first opportunity most of the ladies have had to paddle with top men paddlers in K2 or K3 kayaks,” said the club’s chairman, Rob Savides.

About 70 paddlers took part in the dice last Wednesday evening at Shongweni Dam and enjoyed a braai and party afterwards.

“We invite men, women, boys and girls in the Upper Highway area to join us at Shongweni Dam where we have two highly skilled coaches available to help them get started,” said Rob.

The club’s last dice is on Wednesday, 18 September at 5.30pm. Visitors are welcome. There will be a braai afterwards and The Situation will provide live entertainment from 7pm.
