Kearsney swings victoriously into summer sports

The local school won its cricket and basketball games against Michaelhouse at the weekend.

Cricket

The schools’ cricket season has resumed, with Kearsney’s matches being played against traditional rivals, Michaelhouse. Kearsney’ 1st XI enjoyed a confidence-boosting win on their Smith Oval against Michaelhouse on Saturday. Overall the College did well and won two out of three A-team matches.

Michaelhouse 1st X1 – 128 all out (Gammie 42; Constable 4/27)

Kearsney 1st X1 – 132/7 (Bamber 56, Carmichael 48)

Kearsney won by 3 wickets

Basketball

Kearsney travelled to the Midlands for the 2019/2020 basketball season opener and, having lost its two previous encounters with Michaelhouse, Kearsney were the underdogs going into the match.

The first quarter went as expected and Michaelhouse took an early lead of 9 – 0. Kearsney looked fragile and tentative, while their opponents seemed to take the game in its stride.

Kearsney settled down and found rhythm on offence and played good defence. The team clawed their way back as they closed the point gap to 10 – 7 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw pressure mount on the hosts as Kearsney stepped up the defensive intensity and did not allow them to claim any easy baskets while they converted their own shots. Kearsney entered the change rooms with a 24 – 17 lead at half-time.

The visitors never surrendered their lead and played very well in patches on offence but never not lost their defensive intensity. Kearsney remained ahead on the score board 38 – 30 at the end of the third quarter.

Despite some big play from Kearsney in the fourth quarter, silly mistakes were made on offence with some poor shot selection. Despite two late baskets by Michaelhouse’s star player, JC Olofse, the team was handed a 54 – 46 home defeat, their first of the 2019 season.

Kearsney’s performance was far from polished, but the team displayed grit and determination that will stand them in good stead for the season.

Top performers:

Kearsney: Max Hastings-Brown – 24 points and Sankelo Jiyane – 10 points.

Michaelhouse: JC Olofse – 26 points and Kwanele Khumalo – 14 points.

Indoor hockey league

Kearsney College’s U16A team has won the Durban U16 indoor hockey league. The team beat Northwood School 3 – 2 in the semis and Westville Boys’ High School 2 – 1 in the finals.
