Ruben’s persistence breaks records

When he was younger, Ruben had low muscle tone and struggled to run properly.

RUBEN Visagie, Grade 7, has proven to be a shining star at Highbury Preparatory School.

Ruben, aptly nicknamed ‘Happy Feet’ by his sister, has been racing his way around the fields of Highbury since Grade R.

His love for running started at a young age and he has been breaking records ever since.

“Surprisingly, this was the sport he was least likely to succeed in. When he was younger, he had low muscle tone and struggled to run properly. He had to see a physiotherapist every Friday for more than a year and eventually felt he was ready to join Pacer Training, which is where a lot of other Highbury athletes were training,” said the school’s marketing assistant, Roxanne Kisch.

She said Ruben is a living example of the saying ‘persistence is key’ and his dedication has proven that hard work really does pay off.

In the last term alone, Ruben has broken the Open 800m and Open 1200m records and has been awarded a scholarship to Michaelhouse.

“We cannot wait to watch Ruben as he conquers his goals throughout his life and we are so pleased that he has had a solid foundation to learn and grow at Highbury,” added Kisch.
