Kearsney bags mixed results

Kearsney College took on the tough Northwood rugby and hockey teams during its Founders Weekend.

Rugby:

Kearsney College travelled to Durban to play the highly-rated Northwood team during their Founders weekend.

Kearsney faced the wind head on in the first half and was forced to keep the ball in hand. As expected, the hosts enjoyed the territorial advantage and launched numerous attacks with their bulky forwards around the fringes. They scored two tries and one conversion to lead 12 – 0 at half time.

Unfortunately, Kearsney suffered further injuries and lost both centres and a lock before half time.

The visitors’ used the wind well and applied the same pressure they experienced in the first half. They were well rewarded with tries from full back, Derick Marshall and flyhalf, Matt Hind. Both tries came from scrums close to the try line. Jordan Bamber converted the first try and the scores were locked at 12 – 12, with seven minutes to play.

Northwood capitalised on a defensive error by Kearsney and its front rower barged over from a ruck close to the try line. The hosts regained the lead at 17 – 12.

Both teams enjoyed scoring opportunities, but resolute defences kept the score the same in the exciting last minutes. Northwood secured another penalty to lead 20 – 12. Kearsney showed a lot of character and endeavoured a few more attempts, but ran out of time.

Hockey:

Kearsney went into the game with two key players, Chase Kelly and Jacques Minnaar, out due to injury. However, the team pulled together and played for the badge on their chests against Northwood.

Both teams created equal chances on the day and Kearsney drew with Northwood 2 – 2 . Kearsney’s goals were scored by Daniel de Kock and James Maguire.
