Roné takes on Comrades race for AACL

The animal enthusiast has dedicated her first Comrades Marathon to raise funds for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

AMONG the many 2019 Comrades Marathon novices will be Roné Opperman running in the brown and white stripes of Hillcrest Villagers Athletics Club together with 145 fellow runners from this club.

“I am a little nervous and very excited at the same time about my first Comrades. My training has been well on track and it has been an incredible journey,” said the young blonde runner, who was born in Germiston and moved to Durban 15 years ago.

Roné remembers how contagious the energy, passion and heart of Comrades was when she would watch from the sidelines.

She has dedicated her first run to raise funds for The Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

“I knew I didn’t just want to do the Comrades for the sake of running. I wanted to run for a cause dear to my heart,” said Roné. She has always had a great love for animals and finds the daily stories about animal abuse, neglect and abandonment heart wrenching.

“What I love most about animals is their loyalty, innocence and, above all else, their undying love for us. My purpose in life is to take care and assist in making a difference in the lives of children and animals. If we don’t help them, who will?” she questioned.
