Kearsney draws against old rivals

While Kearsney College drew against Hilton in rugby and hockey, the hockey team claimed a 9 - 1 victory against DHS.

Rugby

It was a close and exciting encounter as Kearsney hosted Hilton in front of a good crowd who were entertained with physical and uncompromising rugby between the two old rivals at the weekend.

Kearsney took the lead with two penalties. The visitors fought back and eventually scored a converted try from a pick up from the base of the scrum and let Hilton to take a 7 – 6 lead.

The local team were unlucky to be called back for an alleged obstruction from a rehearsed attack play. The score remained the same, with the hosts not able to take advantage of the opportunities created.

Kearsney attacked well in the second half, but Hilton’s solid defence, coupled with a number of unforced Kearsney errors, kept the scoreboard at bay. Eventually the busy Kearsney scored from a penalty deep in Hilton’s half.

Hilton scored their second try after collecting a loose ball, for an easy conversion and lead of 14 – 011.

Kearsney played a good territorial game and were eventually rewarded with another Bamber penalty, to level scores at 14-all. Both teams were unable to convert presented opportunities for the rest of the game and it ended in a draw.

Hockey

Kearsney played with huge passion in an electric atmosphere with war cries throughout the game. Kearsney scored first through a penalty corner in the 3rd chukka.

Hilton came out firing in the final chukka, with Kearsney absorbing all the pressure and creating chances on the counter attack. Hilton found the equaliser through a penalty stroke with 90 seconds remaining.

Kearsney’s notable performances were man of the match Chris Kiggen in goals, Calvin Davis at right half, creating some good chances on attack as well as being rock solid in defence. With such a young side, and captain Hayden de Kock who controlled the game from the back.

Kearsney drew with Hilton 1-1.

This was a dominant performance from Kearsney, as they seemed to find rhythm upfront in the game against DHS. Senior striker Dave Hudson led from the front, with some scintillating touches in front of goal. A special moment came when Grade 9 learner, Jacque Minnaar, scored his first goal for the 1st side with a superb reverse stick shot.

Man of the match, Campbell Duckworth, controlled the game from the middle, and created chances for his side. Josh Barrett proved to be a player who does the hard yards, and ensured the youngsters followed.

Penalty corners seemed to be a strong point for both teams as DHS scored their goal from a nice variation. Kearsney scored four goals from penalty corners through Chase Kelly and Calvin Davis, with David Hudson, Jack Hayes, James Maguire, Gontse Machaba and Jacques Minnaar also getting on the scoresheet for the home team.

Kearsney beat DHS 9 – 1.
