Slam dunk victory for Kearsney

While the school's 1st cricket team were unable to rack up a victory against their rivals, the basketball team claimed a resounding 13-point lead.

Basketball
Kearsney travelled to Hilton on a sweltering day to take on rivals, Hilton College. In a sports centre, packed to the rafters with spectators and sounds of beating drums, the two opponents faced each other for the tip off.

Hilton clearly planned to upset Kearsney’s style of play and they executed it very well, with a great deal of physicality. Instead or responding with much of the same, the Kearsney players instead withdrew into themselves. This gave Hilton the advantage they needed.

Kearsney lead on the score board 16-9 at the end of the first quarter; but the second quarter saw them crumble. Hilton outscored them 13 – 18 and made Kearsney’s 29 – 27 half-time lead tenuous at best.

There was no storybook ending for the hosts as Kearsney found their backbone and fought fire with fire. They made it count on the scoreboard and snuffed out the opposition’s hope as they created an 11-point lead by the end of the third quarter (48 – 37).

The fourth quarter was brutal as Hilton realised their hope of victory was slipping away. Kearsney held their nerve and ended the game with a 13-point win of 63-50.

Cricket
Kearsney College continued its inexplicably poor run of form against a very competent Hilton side at the weekend. The declaration format allows the batting side ample opportunity to amass a significant total and Kearsney, having won the toss, elected to bat.

Hilton bowled superbly up front and Kearsney made a paltry 94 runs. Wickets were lost by batsmen succumbing to a combination of short balls and back of a length swing and pace bowling and the disciplined Hilton attack thrived.

With an easy target to beat, Hilton won with nine wickets in hand.

Squash
