Basketball:
Kearsney had a great start to the new basketball season, with a clean sweep, winning all the age group A-team fixtures against DHS.

The weather forced a change of the 1st team venue to Kearsney’s indoor courts. The game started evenly matched with the trading of baskets, but both teams looked rusty from the long December lay off. DHS had a slight advantage at the end of the first quarter, leading 9-8.

Kearsney played much better in the second quarter and pulled away from their opponents on a few occasions, with DHS fighting back to narrow the scores. Half time saw the home team up by five points (24-19).

They began to work harder on defence and offence, managing to open up a 12-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

DHS continued to fight and never gave up. Playing at home gave Kearsney an advantage, with the large home crowd support pushing them to extra efforts. They won the game 61-44.

Waterpolo:
Kearsney’s 1st water polo team travelled to DHS on Saturday hoping to kick of the season on a good note.

Kearsney started the game with a tight press that pressured DHS into early mistakes. Kearsney were soon ahead 2-0. Playing in a smaller pool, however, meant the Kearsney attack was cramped they didn’t make use of all of their opportunities. DHS capitalised on a Kearsney mistake and scored a counter attack goal and made the score 2-1. Kearsney tightened up their defence and scored two unanswered goals to lead 4-1 at the end of the 1st chukka.

It was a quick start for the 2nd chukka as Kearsney scored from the first attack. DHS struggled to come to terms with the pressure defence and were constantly on the back foot. Kearsney were clinical throughout the chukka and scored four unanswered goals.

The 3rd chukka saw Kearsney use their bench with pleasing results. Although they were a little less clinical, the new youngsters played with confidence. Despite a few close calls, they extended the score to 11-1.

The 4th chukka followed a similar pattern with the rotational changes. This kept the pressure on DHS and the relentless Kearsney counter attack added another four goals to their tally.

The match ended 16-1 to Kearsney.

Triathlon:
Josh Steytler, who is in Grade 11 at Kearsney, was selected to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the 2019 SA Triathlon Championships in March. Josh finished third in the 16/17-year-old sprint category at the provincial triathlon champs at Midmar last weekend.

Tennis:
Kade Mindry competed in two national tennis tournaments during the December holidays. He won the tournament in Cape Town and was runner-up at the Stellenbosch event.
