HIGHBURY Preparatory School was buzzing with excitement as headmaster, Roland Lacock cut the ribbon to signal the official opening of their new single-track mountain bike route for the Grade Rs.
Highbury invited Enduro racer, Matthew Camp, a Grade 12 learner from Kearsney, to demonstrate some awesome mountain biking technical skills after which he then lead groups of excited Grade R boys through the course for the first time.
Head of foundation phase sport, Andre de Beer and estate manager, Nick Maritz were both kitted up on their bikes ready to teach the boys how to navigate their way between the forest of trees, through the tunnel of bushes and over roots, sand, grass and across the ‘rock garden’.

Belinda Willows, head of foundation phase, said there’s a catchy saying, ‘You’re only one mountain bike ride away from a good mood’.
“When you finish a bike ride, there is a reason you feel energised and happy, science. When you sweat and move your body, you release endorphins and other ‘happy hormones’ that help change your mood for the better,” said Willows.
She added there is a whole lot more smiling throughout the day when the boys have had an early morning workout.
“At Highbury we are blessed with a beautiful big field which is the Grade R playground, a great place to exercise, run and play. Now with our mountain bike trail our boys can challenge themselves, get healthy exercise and finish with a sense of accomplishment and exhilaration. A great way to start a happy day at Highbury.”
